Contractor comparison guide

How to compare St. Louis concrete contractors

A useful concrete proposal defines demolition, base preparation, thickness, reinforcement, joints, slope, finish, curing, cleanup, and warranty. Compare the complete scope—not only the total at the bottom.

Choose experience that fits the project

Concrete contractors may specialize in driveways, patios, sidewalks, steps, structural slabs, decorative finishes, replacement, lifting, resurfacing, or repairs. Ask whether the company routinely performs your project type and can explain the intended load, site conditions, drainage, and finish.

Questions to ask a concrete contractor

  • What demolition, removal, excavation, and disposal are included?
  • How will the subgrade be evaluated and what compacted base is proposed?
  • What concrete thickness, strength, reinforcement, and edge details are included?
  • Where will control and isolation joints be placed?
  • How will the finished surface move water away from structures and adjoining property?
  • What finish, color, sealer, curing method, and protection are included?
  • Who confirms permits, right-of-way work, utility notification, and inspections?
  • What payment schedule, change-order process, cleanup, and written warranty apply?

Compare bids on the same scope

One bid may include removal, stone base, reinforcement, sealing, and restoration while another excludes them. Ask contractors to clarify quantities, dimensions, material specifications, access assumptions, exclusions, and optional work so the totals can be compared fairly.

Verify the business

Confirm the contracting entity, appropriate insurance, relevant experience, references, written contract terms, and any licensing or registration required for the project and jurisdiction. Avoid relying only on a verbal price, an online badge, or a large deposit request.

Local planning across the metro

Municipal rules vary across St. Louis City, the many St. Louis County municipalities, surrounding Missouri counties, and Metro East Illinois. Driveway approaches, curb or sidewalk work, right-of-way activity, larger or structural slabs, grading, and attached improvements may require approval. Contact Missouri 811 or JULIE in Illinois before excavation and follow the instructions provided.

Request local concrete help

Describe the project, approximate size, ZIP code, state, current surface, access, and desired finish. If an independent provider is available for that area and project type, the provider may contact you about an on-site assessment. You are not obligated to hire a provider.
